Samsung Odyssey Neo G8 Review

The Samsung Odyssey Neo G8 is the world's first 4K 240 Hz monitor. This 32-inch display uses Quantum Mini LED, like what we see in Samsung TVs. After testing this out with PC and console gaming, we were impressed with this beast of a monitor.

The 31.5-inch matte display features a 1000R curve, which is pretty aggressive, adding to the immersive experience of gaming as the edges of the display wrap into your peripheral vision. If you are looking for a larger monitor, be sure to check out the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9.

Previously, 4K monitors topped out at 144 Hz, making this jump to 240 Hz even more impressive. The Neo G8 supports AMD FreeSync and is VRR capable. Additional important specs include 1,196 individual backlight zones; a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio; and an eye-blistering 2,000 nits of brightness. It is also Display HDR 2000 certified.

The Samsung Odyssey Neo G8 is on sale now for $1,499.99 at Best Buy, Samsung and other retailers.

The Samsung Odyssey Neo G8 is an absolutely impressive monitor that handled every game we threw at it and likely will excel at anything you could, as well. It is capable of delivering 4K resolution at a 240 Hz refresh rate, something previously unheard of and that most setups cannot currently achieve.

Testing with an Acer gaming laptop and the Xbox Series X, we could drive up 4K at 120 frames per second. The response time is incredibly fast, which is essential while playing first-person shooters and racing in Forza Horizon 5.

While playing Halo Infinite and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, the Odyssey Neo G8 was able to keep up with the fast pace of the game while displaying a semiwide field of view. The 1000R curve helped me feel immersed in the game and placed the edges of the screen near the boundary of my peripheral vision. For this testing, we maxed out at 120 frames per second.

The Mini LED backlighting is capable of good isolation between the bright and dark parts of the game we played. This is especially noticeable during explosions in Halo, firefights in Call of Duty and the mix of thunderstorms, headlights and signage in Forza Horizon 5.

The HDR performance is impressive and very similar to the larger G9s that we reviewed last year. This, paired with its excellent black performance, really helps this monitor stand out in more than just the specifications department. Its matte finish keeps reflections and glare from interrupting gameplay. It performs well in a room with multiple windows and lights, allowing us to focus on the gaming—not on glare.

The Odyssey Neo G8 design is very similar to the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 that we reviewed last year. It looks like Samsung shrunk down the popular Neo G9 to deliver this model. You get the same deep 1000R curve and white back with Core Sync Lighting and a very similar-looking stand.

The Core Sync Lighting is on the front lower corners of the monitor and on the back where a circular area lights up. We liked that you could see the colors on the front of the monitor, including popular effects. The display's RGB allows you to match with the lighting on your keyboard, mouse and other setup components.

This monitor is very stable on a desk, and the smaller size makes it easier to fit into a setup than its 49-inch sibling. The stand allows for a wide range of motion up and down, and it can pivot, tilt and swivel. If you want to hook it up to a monitor arm, it includes a 100 by 100 millimeter mount.

Samsung adds a plethora of connectivity options, including a DisplayPort 1.4, two HDMI 2.1 and USB 3.0 up and down ports. This allows you to connect multiple sources to the monitor to blend work, PC gaming and console gaming into one setup.

Setting up this monitor is relatively easy and something we finished in 5 to10 minutes, including routing the cables. Unlike the massive Odyssey Neo G9, you don't need someone's help to get this up and on your desk.

The monitor connects to its arm with a few screws, and then you're ready to connect to your computer or gaming console. A cover snaps on the back to hide the ports and complete the setup's clean look.

The Samsung Odyssey Neo G8 is the fastest 4K monitor that you can buy, and at 32 inches with a 1000R curve, it is also very immersive. It is an expensive monitor, but it delivers a lot of features and is ready for the future.

Gamers should factor in that no single graphics card can deliver 4K resolution at 240 Hz at this time, so you won't be topping out what this monitor can do with AAA games soon.

For gamers with the budget and who are looking to invest in a monitor that can handle basically anything that current high-end graphics cards can throw at it, this is a great choice.
