Interior paint plans to spruce up any indoor space

While there’s no denying curb appeal is important, once the weather cools off in the fall, folks spend most of the time inside.

Interior paint can be a quick fix to spruce up rooms, making indoor spaces more enjoyable to spend time in. But because there are thousands of color choices — not to mention techniques — the process of starting an interior paint job can be overwhelming.

First, look for high-quality paint products. The last thing anyone wants is to redo the job in six months due to fading color or other performance issues.

Here are some tips and ideas on how to make a room seem brand-new with interior paint.

Accent wallsAn accent wall is one wall painted an eye-catching color while the other walls in the space are left a neutral shade. This is particularly useful to adopt a trendy color (such as a “2022 color of the year” like Benjamin Moore’s “October Mist 1495,” a silver-green sage) but not be completely wedded to the trend in case it cycles out of popularity. Imagine a bright-red wall behind the dining-room table, filled with a few pieces of art. Another common spot for an accent wall is behind a home office desk or bed.

Fifth-wall ceilingIt used to be that the ceiling was almost always white, cream or ivory — no matter what color the walls were. Not anymore. Painting the ceiling a color that differs from the walls can have a surprising effect. To cultivate a cozy ambiance, choose a darker shade, such as chocolate brown, soft black or navy blue.

Complementary color schemeNot sure what colors are complementary? Spend a few minutes with a color wheel, which is a tool Isaac Newton invented in 1666 that many artists and designers still use today. Colors complementing each other are opposite on the wheel, such as cardinal red and icy blue, or bright blue and sunny yellow.

Monochromatic color schemeIf you are set on a particular color throughout your home, an easy way to create flow between rooms — as opposed to feeling an abrupt shift each time you enter a differently colored room — one solution is to stick to one shade. Say it’s blue. Range from cornflower blue to robin’s-egg blue by folding in a second shade that doesn’t detract, such as white or slate gray, to complete a monochromatic vibe.

Trim paintDoes painting an entire room — or even the ceiling or an accent wall — quickly overwhelm you? There’s one more tip to dress up a home’s interior: trim paint. Apply paint only on the windowsills, window frames or door frames. This is a great way to flaunt character details in the crown molding or clean lines for historical or modern homes. Borrow a trick from the curb-appeal route and paint both sides of an interior door the same color. Imagine working from home on the other side of a cheery-yellow or a serene blue door.
